Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
