Law Enforcement Actions

Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.

Illegal Transport Methods

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

European Tensions

These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
